After a recent bit of a health scare and genuinely feeling crappy, I decided to take charge of my health and physical well-being.  Besides making some dietary changes I also knew that exercise was crucial to improving my health.  I remember my younger days when I loved to be active; I loved to dance, to ride my bike, to play games in the yard with friends, and even to do some light jogging and walking.  Now I felt awful, out of shape, tired, and not motivated to do much of anything.

Stick with it and ask for help.

I tried to think of how I’ve motivated to do things that were difficult for me in the past.  When I first learned how to use the computer, manage my web site, use social media, and write blogs, I really struggled.  The learning curve was slow and I often felt like giving up.  I learned quickly that if I stuck with it, practiced, and asked for help, I would eventually get better at any task and I would feel great because of it.

Exercise couldn’t be much different so I started slow with relatively easy forms of exercise like a walk or using an elliptical machine.  As I got stronger I pushed harder either in the form of more intensity or duration.  I added weight lifting, harder aerobics, and some slow jogging each with a rather miserable beginning but eventually with a feeling of success.  I keep reminding myself that when I get stronger and do things better, it feels really, really good.

What are you avoiding because you aren’t good at it?

Getting stronger has felt wonderful.  Challenging myself turned into something that I enjoy.  I’m starting to even like exercise rather than dread it.  I’ve used the same mantra to get comfortable with cooking different meals, trying new foods, and adopting a healthier life style.  I’m looking forward to riding my bike and feeling like a kid who loves to move.  Any of you want to come over for a game of kick the can?

What are you avoiding because you aren’t good at it?  What can you start today even if you are unsure and uncomfortable?  How long will it take you to get better at it if you keep trying?  Let me know how you do!
