So often, I hear people talking about leadership and communication as soft skills. Those same people will tell me how hard it is to lead others, to have challenging conversations, and to really be great listeners. Leadership is hard and most of us never actually learned how to do it. We didn’t learn how to be great listeners and we certainly haven’t learned how to have hard conversations.

Why is it that we put years and years of education in STEM skills and yet almost no time or education on relationship development and communication? Why are these skills on the back burner of learning when they are the most important skills in our personal and professional development? You can be the most educated person in the room, but if you can’t get along with others, who cares?

If you want to excel in life, learn how to get along with others. #leadership #communication #softskills Click To Tweet

This may be a bit self-serving in that I’m a leadership coach and I help people become powerful leaders, but isn’t it time to really learn how to lead and communicate? How much better would your life be if you knew how to handle challenging situations, both at work and at home? Maybe start with some online training, read a book, hire a coach (hint, hint), or take communication courses.

If you want to excel in life, learn how to get along with others. Educate yourself on these supposed soft skills and watch how your life changes. Put energy, time, and money into these skills, and you will see how much easier and enjoyable it is to lead and communicate with those around you. I can’t recommend it enough.
