I’m often asked, “How can I be happier?” Happiness might not be the only emotion we seek but it’s certainly a popular one. The short answer is that happiness is an inside job, a job only you can take on for yourself. No one else is responsible for your happiness but you. To address what made me happier, I watched for things throughout the day that led to my happiness and joy and things that didn’t.
Here’s what I found. Grab your journal or make a note on your phone throughout the day, and let me know what you come up with.
I’m Happier When:
-I don’t look in the mirror very often.
-I don’t watch or read the news numerous times in a day.
-I don’t doom scroll.
-I don’t find fault in others.
-I don’t find fault in myself.
-I don’t think about my appearance.
-I don’t criticize my appearance.
-I set boundaries for myself.
-I say no when I want to.
-I say yes without guilt.
-I say no without guilt.
-I push myself to do something other than sit home.
-I release judgment.
-I don’t talk about politics too frequently.
-I spend time with the people I love most and my dog.
-I practice gratitude.
-I have coffee.
-I’m reading a good book.
-I’m outside.
-I’m present for other people.
-I’m doing the work that I love so much.
-I get a good night’s sleep.
-I’m in nature.
-I’m belly laughing.
-There is chocolate in my house.
-I’m with my dearest friends.
-It’s summer in Chicago.
-It’s fall in Chicago.
-It’s spring in Chicago.
-The first snow in Chicago.
-I’m traveling.
-I’m healthy.
-I’m grateful for all of it.
