Since most of my work time is spent with women, I’ve learned a lot about the internal workings of said women. There seems to be an epidemic of women who walk around with an internal mean girl who criticizes them endlessly. This mean girl belittles their appearance, their confidence, their skills, and their abilities. The mean girl keeps many of these women from living and working to their full potential of both skill and happiness.
How can we get rid of this mean girl?
How can we get rid of this mean girl? Can we exorcise her from our bodies through some mystical ritual? Maybe, but I’m not the person to give you that advice. The truth is that we can’t get rid of the mean girl, but we can learn to work with her so that she’s helpful instead of a hindrance. How, you say? Maybe a bit easier than you would imagine.
What if you realized that the mean girl is you?
What if you accepted the mean girl as part of the growth and experience of your life? What if you saw that the mean girl is part of maturation and putting her gently to the side will give you better results than trying to cruelly kick her to the curb? What if you realized that the mean girl is you and that sometimes you need some patience and understanding versus derision and criticism? What if you asked the mean girl to be friends and to start treating you as a friend versus an enemy?
I know this all sounds a bit odd, yet isn’t it odd that we give more credence to the mean girl in our head versus the nice things others say to us in person? Why is it that we are so willing to accept and think the worst about ourselves, but not find ways to acknowledge, accept, and utilize our strengths?
