I do group executive coaching for the organization, Chief. Chief is a think tank for female executives to help them achieve senior level positions and to stay there. They have grown exponentially over the last year, as apparently women were looking for an organization in which women support each other through networking and group coaching. My groups are filled with brilliant, funny, direct, and wildly competent women. I’m incredibly lucky to be part of Chief and to coach these women.
At the end of 2022, I asked each of my groups about their goals for 2023. One group in particular, the group with very young children, all said, “No goals.” Every last one of them talked about enjoying the status quo, slowing down, being present for their families, and enjoying their current organization and positions. They all supported each other in taking a breather, even if it’s a year or more of being here, in this moment, and thriving in that space.
These bright, young women motivated me to consider doing the same. Admittedly, I still set a few goals. However, some of my goals were related to being present and internal growth through that presence. Not every year has to be a year of wild change and growth. Growth can look like rest and mindfulness. It can look like a great novel or a really fun television show. We, as a Western society, have gotten so focused on constant growth and power goals that we’ve lost sight of what we have right now.

Which goals don’t feel in alignment or feel like too much pressure or even unnecessary? What would a year of delightful status quo feel like? What would thriving in the moment look like? Let me know about your “no goals” for 2023 and let’s celebrate them!
