So many of the women I know tell me they are looking for more balance in their lives. They feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and scattered in a million directions. Most of them feel as if they aren’t doing a good job either at home or at work, and thus are always feeling guilty and unhappy. That’s a terrible way to live for any of us.

What is balance really? And is there any such thing when it comes to family life? What if we are searching for something that isn’t very realistic, and thus making ourselves unhappy because we can’t find it? What if balance isn’t something we do, but rather something we choose to feel?

Being out of balance isn’t our response to the world we live in versus what’s going on in our life. What if we chose to look at our days from a different point of view and that point of view is choice? We can either choose to continue our current behavior or not, but we can also choose to look at that behavior from any angle that we want to see it.

Boring Balance v. Joyful Chaos

My life is pretty busy. I have two kids home for the summer, a full time career, a husband, a dog, and friends that I love to see. I can either label that busyness as a terrible, stressful situation or I can label it as a big, full, energetic life. If I choose the first, I’m choosing to be stressed out and unhappy. If I choose the second, I feel balanced and joyful. Not every moment in my life is fabulous, but my outlook on it makes most of it feel that way.

Life is either a fabulous adventure or it is one big pain in the butt. You get to choose which one it is. You get to choose if you feel guilty or not. You can come home to your children and apologize for having a busy day or you can come home and be grateful for the time you do have with them. Why ruin your time with them by making excuses and feeling bad? Do the best you can with what you have or change what you can. Those are your only choices.

Work/life balance is really just life. Nothing is ever completely balanced, so why try to have something that elusive? Enjoy your life or change it. Balance sounds a little boring to me. I’m going for joyful chaos and I’m planning to enjoy every crazy minute of it. Who’s with me?
